Telling From the Middle

If you can start from the end, can you start from the middle? Sure you can. In fact, most people find themselves in the middle of a story map in everyday life, unsure of how they got there and where to go. Even more important, they’re not sure what success would look like to them and therefore haven’t written the ending to the story.

If we don’t create our own stories, someone else will do it for us.

Seeing life as a story that can be written by each of us is a powerful and pragmatic metaphor. If we start from the point that today is the day that we’re called to adventure to address a problem, question, opportunity, challenge, or goal, and then we place ourselves squarely in the center of our own personal story maps. It’s up to each of us to resolve our issues and finish our stories. This much is clear to me: If we don’t write the stories of our lives, someone else will do it for us. The stories they write are often not what we need or want.
